Upper Body Strength for Gravel Cyclists

Why do gravel cyclists need upper body strength? Well, picture yourself heading down a descent on your gravel bicycle. You maneuver up and over little bumps, rocks, roots and through ruts. This happens dozens of times over the course of many hours. So when you’re riding a gravel bike, which does not have suspension, your body needs to work a bit harder to absorb the shock, and that’s where strength training comes in.

Strong shoulders, arms, and a strong core will pay dividends as a gravel cyclist. Due to the increasing popularity of gravel cycling, the events you may be signing up for are now longer, harder and occurring more frequently. This takes quite a toll on your body.

As you work in your base miles, set aside time each week for strength training. This Outdoor Fitness Coach video contains great exercises for gravel cyclists to easily build strength off the bike.

Strength training exercises are also a great addition to your time in the saddle. With consistent practice, these exercises will help you better absorb the physical chatter or shock on the wrists, shoulders, and neck when riding over dirt without any suspension.
